Snapshots are extremely important in any kind of production or development environment. Unforeseen circumstances could cost you days or months of productivity. You could easily lose an entire project if you have not backed up your files. While there are many ways of backing up your important data, there is also a method available through the control panel: Snapshots.

Snapshots copy an image of your entire VPS and store it on our cloud servers. They are different from the "backups" feature, which offers automated weekly backups and can be selected by ticking the backups box. Backups this way cost with a monthly subscription. You can check the backup price of your server plan in the Image tab. Snapshots are independent from the Server used to create them and are stored separately away from your server.

Three uses for the Snapshot Backup include the following.

  • Easy 1-Click backup
  • Backups are stored on a different server for added security
  • Preserve your entire server in a working state before making changes (highly recommended before upgrading software that could break your server)

Take a Snapshot

To snapshot a Server:

  1. First navigate to your server within the control panel, then click the Image tab.
  2. From there, enter a name for the snapshot in the empty field.
  3. Then click the Create Snapshot button.
  4. A progress bar will show the progress of snapshot creation, and once complete, the snapshot will be listed along with any other previous Snapshots. It may take a few minutes or longer depending on the size of your server. If  you did not find the snapshot listed in the drop-down list in the Image tab, please refresh your browser page to get the updated event.

Restore Server

Snapshots can also be used to restore a server to the point in time the snapshot was taken. This can be useful for restoring files that were accidentally deleted or to revert to a known-good Server to recover from accidental configuration changes.

To restore  a Server:

  1. First navigate to your server within the control panel, then click the Image tab.
  2. From there, choose an image from the drop-down list.
  3. Then click the Restore Snapshot button.
  4. A progress bar will show the progress of snapshot restoration, and once complete, a Restored Server window will confirm that the existing Droplet had been replaced with the older Snapshot image.  You can then navigate to the Info Tab to see the Image Name changed to the restores snapshot name. It may take a few minutes or longer depending on the size of your server. If  you did not find the snapshot restored info , please refresh your browser page to get the updated event.

Delete Snapshots

To delete  a Snapshot:

  1. First navigate to your server within the control panel, then click the Image tab.
  2. From there, choose an image from the drop-down list you want to delete.
  3. Then click the Delete Snapshot button.
  4. A progress bar will show the progress of snapshot deletion. It may take a few minutes or longer depending on the size of your server. If  you did not find the snapshot deleted info , please refresh your browser page to get the updated event.
